The Ghost Gang

Pac-Man is friends with ghosts.

Understanding Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde

Ask any Pac-Man fan who the real stars of the game are, and some will say it's not Pac-Man at all — it's the ghosts. Known collectively as the Ghost Gang, Blinky, Pinky, Inky, and Clyde are far more sophisticated than they appear. Each one follows a distinct algorithm, and understanding them is the key to mastering the game.

Meet the Gang

Blinky (red) is the most aggressive. He directly targets Pac-Man's current position, meaning he will relentlessly chase you down no matter where you go. As you progress through levels and eat more dots, Blinky actually speeds up — a mechanic players nicknamed "Cruise Elroy" — making him increasingly dangerous as a stage goes on.

Pinky (pink) tries to be clever. Rather than chasing where you are, she targets the position four tiles ahead of Pac-Man's current direction, attempting to cut you off. She's the ambusher of the group, and running in a straight line is often the worst thing you can do against her.

Inky (blue) is the wildcard. His targeting uses a combination of Pac-Man's position and Blinky's position, making his behavior the hardest to predict. He can seem harmless one moment and suddenly appear directly in your path the next. Experienced players find Inky the most dangerous ghost precisely because of this unpredictability.

Chase, Scatter, and the Art of the Pattern

Clyde (orange) has a reputation for being dim, and honestly, it's earned. He targets Pac-Man directly when far away, but once he gets within eight tiles, he abandons the chase and retreats to his corner. This quirky behavior makes him easy to manipulate — but don't get too comfortable. All four ghosts operate in alternating "chase" and "scatter" modes, pulling back to patrol their corners periodically before resuming the hunt. Learning that rhythm is what separates casual players from high scorers.
