Power Pellets and Strategy

Pac-Man tracking ghosts.

How to Actually Get a High Score

Pac-Man looks simple. Eat the dots, avoid the ghosts, clear the maze. But beneath that cheerful surface lies a surprisingly deep strategy game, and players who understand its mechanics can rack up scores that seem almost impossible to casual observers.

Making the Most of Power Pellets

The most important item on the board is the power pellet — the four large flashing dots positioned in the corners of the maze. Eating one temporarily turns the ghosts blue and vulnerable, allowing Pac-Man to eat them for bonus points. Here's where the strategy deepens: each ghost eaten in a single power pellet session is worth more than the last. The first ghost is worth 200 points, the second 400, the third 800, and the fourth a whopping 1,600. Chaining all four ghosts in a single power pellet is one of the most satisfying plays in gaming.

Bonus fruit also appears beneath the ghost house twice per level, offering additional points. These range from cherries worth 100 points in the early levels all the way up to keys worth 5,000 points in later stages. Grabbing the fruit without getting cornered requires careful routing.

Patterns, Tunnels, and the Perfect Game

Advanced players use a technique called "patterns" — memorized, repeatable routes through the maze that allow them to clear boards without improvising. Many of the original arcade's levels have been fully mapped, and dedicated players have developed patterns that can clear boards without ever being touched. The famous "perfect game" — completing all 255 playable levels without dying and eating every ghost possible — results in a maximum score of 3,333,360 points, a benchmark first achieved by Billy Mitchell in 1999.

The maze layout itself rewards directional awareness. The tunnels on the left and right sides of the screen, which wrap Pac-Man from one side to the other, are a crucial tool — ghosts slow down significantly while passing through them, giving you a window to escape or reposition.
